Helping Swedish Expatriates Return Home

The Problem

Swedish women expatriates, part of the Swedish Women’s Educational Association (SWEA) worldwide network, lacked a mentor group to support those interested in returning to their homeland after many years abroad.

The Solution

Conceived and implemented an intensive program of seminars within the framework of the San Francisco Chapter of SWEA to prepare its members for repatriation, including meetings with experts in taxation, finance, relocation and starting one’s own business.  The purpose of this project was to:

  • Give members facts about contemporary Sweden
  • Facilitate exchange of knowledge among members
  • Analyze critical questions, such as taxation
  • Interview returning members for readjustment advice
  • Collaborate with Swedish multinationals on human resource issues raised by returning citizens

The Results

  • A worldwide mentorship organization, Hemvändarna, has been established to support Swedish women planning to return to their native country
  • Collaborating with local chapters in Sweden to establish support groups
  • Participating in SVIV/SWEA Conference “Swede in the World: Opportunities and Challenges”
