Identifying New Markets: China and the WTO

The Problem

Corporations in the U.S. and the rest of the developed world agreed that the time had come to invite the People’s Republic of China to become a member of the World Trade Organization.  China also appeared ready to begin to comply with the complex set of rules required by members of that world body.

The Solution

Created opportunities for U.S. corporate leaders to meet with the Chinese delegates to the 1999 Ministerial Meeting in Seattle. Orchestrated effective dialogues between California-based companies, such as Qualcomm, and Chinese representatives. Collaborated with the Committee for Economic Development in producing opportunities for business leaders to meet with the U.S. government’s leading policy maker on China’s admission to the WTO, resulting in ratification by the U.S. Congress.

The Results

  • Helped U.S. corporate leaders identify potential new geographic markets, such as China’s, aided their understanding of the geopolitical consequences of entering those markets, and assisted them in building personal relationships with key leaders from those markets.
  • China was successfully admitted to membership in the World Trade Organization in 2001.
